Susan Kaprov: Self-Portraits 1975-1990

These experimental black and white self-portraits were produced on a Haloid Xerox machine, the first commercial photo-copier ever manufactured. After the image is electrostatically transfered to rag paper, the carbon toner is still loose, enabling me to hand-manipulate the image before it is permanently fixed in a special heating tray.

Sixteen of these works are in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Chasing Paper

Folded, loose, and crinkled papers of all varieties, colors, and configurations float, collide, fly,
and “dance" freely in tandem with urban breezes - yet go largely unnoticed by
our fast-paced city dwellers. Now they’re ready for their close-ups!

"If the artists of the Renaissance had access to modern technology, this is what their work would look like," said a curator of contemporary art. These hyper-detailed images carefully merge digitally scanned live flowers and plants with artificial ones, blurring the distinction between the real and the artificial. Represented in major museums and collections world-wide.
